What Kind of a Leader are you?

Research shows that individual personalities fit perfectly with what type of job we take and how do we manage these positions we are in. The fit process suggests that people seeking diverse experiences known as “enlargers” tend to succeed in managerial positions. On the contrary, “enfolders” or people withdrawing into the familiar showed less success in managerial positions. Examining leaders across several levels of leadership in an organization opens the discussion on who we are and how we can be a combination of several leadership styles. The below shows briefly the difference between each and every type of leadership. But do you think you can fit into more than one type?

Let us discover together the importance of these types and how we can achieve high level of organizational performance by knowing thyself.

Transformational Leadership

According to Burns, one of the first to study the notion of leadership, defined Transformational Leadership as a, “process in which leaders and followers promote each other to higher levels of morality and motivation. Transformational leaders help their followers to look at old problems via a new perspective. They stimulate their followers to attempt higher than usual levels. Transformational leaders inspire their followers to think more than their own aims and interests and to focus on greater team, organizational, national and global objectives.”

Transactional Leadership

Burns defines transactional leadership as, “a type of leadership based on transacts between leader and follower in a way that mutual personal tendencies are met.” The relationship between followers and leaders are defined on the profit-oriented perspective and based on exchanging one thing to other thing. Transactional leadership points out the relation between leader and follower to provide their personal interests.

Situational Leadership

The Situational Leadership Model (SML) focuses on the adaptation of managers and their styles of the readiness of their subordinates. In addition, the SML prescribes appropriate styles that match the maturity of subordinates. This refers to the subordinates’ readiness and willingness to focus their behaviour on a task or objective.

The diagram hereunder shows us how we can better achieve a high liability in this model and lead in uncertainty.

The Servant Leadership

The notion of servant leadership was discovered back in 1977. Through an essay entitled "The servant as leader" Greenleaf, stated that the leader begins with a natural feeling to serve others. Leading does not come first but to serve others is what it makes to be a servant leadership. Among the characteristics of servant leadership are:

  1. Being person-centered and growth-oriented, they can turn ordinary workers into future leaders and adapt to change effectively.
  2. Servant leadership serves as an antidote to corruptions and abuses in high places.
  3. Servant leadership can help reduce burnout and build an emotionally healthy organization.
  4. Servant leadership is based on humanistic, spiritual, and ethical values.
  5. Servant leadership represents the most effective and comprehensive approach to human resources management and development.
